The Joy of Stress

Joy, associated with Stress? When we think of these two concepts, they seem to be oxymorons. But modern stress is more complex than the familiar episodes of carnage that we see on the evening news. Stress influences our children at school. Stress also affects our performance as adults, influencing our work, our play, and our relationships. Even the lack of Stress can have a negative effect on the elderly. As a medical doctor, Peter Hanson has seen how stress can affect over 90% of all illnesses, aches, and pains. He also sees a nation turning to drugs and other passive “cures”. (One of the fastest growing prescriptions is the anti-depressant category, in pediatrics!) The same insights he gives his patients are here in his book.

The Joy of Stress is one of the best books this reviewer has come across in a lifetime. Hanson breaks each area of life down and explains in a pleasant, sometimes humorous manner, how the normal, and not so normal stresses that are met in everyday life can be handled positively by anyone who would like to follow his advice. Hanson has used Dr. HansSelye’s general adaptation response to stress in explaining the anatomy of stress. The author reinforces Selye’s theories, but goes on to apply them more factually and graphically (by the use of pictures on almost every page) to his own theories. Of the five appendices, three deal with balanced diet, one of the most important aspects in the study of health today. Recommended reading for senior students and public libraries.
